It is important that you keep your chimney swept and your wood burner maintained. Chimney fires can be very dramatic, and carbon monoxide poisoning from blocked chimneys is very dangerous. HETAS recommends twice a season when burning wood, and once when burning solid fuel. In practise it depends on how often and how hot you burn your fuel, and also fuel quality and how efficient your appliance is.
It is best to get your chimney swept at the end of the burning season in spring, this ensures that the soot isn't sat in the chimney all year causing corrosion, and it gives us more time to source spare parts if needs be. Unless you don't have a bird guard on top, then we will need to sweep after September before you start using it incase birds have nested.
We are able to effect many types of chimney repairs if required.
At a minimum stoves should be swept annually, maintenance plays an important roll in ensuring your stove burns for years to come. I have known small issues to become very expensive issues when maintenance has been ignored or not spotted.
We can supply and fit all the spare parts your stove needs to stay in top condition. Including door ropes, firebricks, baffles, and glass. We can also supply paint and consider full refurbs on a case by case basis. We also stock thermometers to keep you burning efficiently.
Chimney liners are an essential part of most new stove installations, unless your property is roughly less than 50 years old and the chimney is in good condition. Most modern chimney liners are guaranteed for 20+ years but if they are abused i've seen them fail in 3! Mixing smokeless coal and wood and burning small amounts of smokeless coal at low temperatures is usually the culprit as it forms sulphuric acid.
We take a very careful approach to birds nest removal, they can be very messy if the correct preparation is not done. This will likely take longer than a normal sweep and we will check with our camera that we have removed it all. Chimneys that are blocked with nest are a huge Carbon Monoxide and fire risk.
Think you can't have a woodburner because you live in a new build? Want to bring an old chimney back into use? Wanting to upgrade an old inefficient stove to an Ecodesign or ClearSkies model? We can come out and give you a free estimate of what's required. And i will be there on installation day too getting stuck in!
Every one of our customers will get a certificate at the end of the appointment detailing what has been done and any areas that need to be improved. Landlords will get a slightly different safety certificate for their records.
Stack repairs are often overlooked as it is 'out of sight, out of mind'. While we don't routinely do repointing we do rebed chimney pots and loose bricks, and render the insides of old flues to stabilise them before relining. We can recommend other tradesmen if we think other work is required, and I will tell you if I see any broken roof slates before i access the chimney stack.
We use the latest camera technology to investigate and identify any suspected issues with your chimney. This is especially important on older and unlined chimneys.
While chimney sweeping we use The Soot Devil HEPA Vacuum from Rotary Power Sweeping. This is a very powerful piece of equipment and is specifically designed to handle soot. When installing in old chimneys we use another pusher fan and ducting to extract as much building dust as we can from your property. We cover with sheeting when required.
We perform a smoke evacuation check after every sweep. If we suspect the chimney is no longer in sound condition and we aren't sure after a camera survey, we will do a full smoke test where we block the top and bottom and see where our white smoke escapes.
I will give you a full written report and explain to you the exact condition of your appliance if i believe it to have been installed incorrectly or if it has become hazardous over the years due to chimney failure. A carbon monoxide alarm is essential within 3 metres of any solid fuel appliance. It is important to replace them within the 7-10 year recommended time.
We offer replacement and new bird guards for a variety of different chimney terminations to ensure they cant get into the chimney and nest. Better bird guards also stop rain getting into the chimney, and you can get specialised ones to combat downdraughts.
